Today the Ibn Sina Foundation participated in the research and practice conference “The history of Islam in Russia: understanding with looking into the future”, which was held in the State Duma of the Russian Federation.

Andrey Lukashev, research director of the Ibn Sina Foundation, presented a report on the activities of the Ibn Sina Foundation in the context of Islamic education in Russia.

The Foundation representative highlighted the role of Islamic reformers, such as Musa Bigiyev, Zaynulla Rasulev, Zeki Velidi Togan, Shihabetdin Marjani, in Islamic education in Russia. “Today Islamic education is as relevant as 100 years ago, since the Russian ummah, being a part of a larger Islamic world, faces the same challenges as Muslims in other countries. Islamic education can be an efficient response to these challenges”, - he said.

Lukashev emphasized the contribution of the Moscow Islamic Institute to Islamic education, but also mentioned a shortage of academic works on Islamic culture and Russian translations of classical works that could be used in the educational process.

According to Lukashev, this issue constitutes one of the Ibn Sina Foundation’s priorities. Over 10 years of its existence, the Foundation published about 270 books, mostly the works of the classics of the Islamic thought, as well as the works of Russian academics on different aspects of the Islamic culture.

The conference “The history of Islam in Russia: understanding with looking into the future” coincided with the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Religious Board of Muslims of Russia, the 115th anniversary of the Moscow Cathedral mosque and the 20th anniversary of the Moscow Islamic Institute. The event was organized by the fraction of the “Spravedlivaya Rossiya” party at the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the Moscow Islamic Institute and the secretariat of the International Muslim Forum. A presentation of the book “The history of Islam in Russia” written by Damir Mukhetdinov also took place during the event.
