Philosophy and irfan

The Ibn Sina Islamic Culture Research Foundation and the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences have been publishing the books of the academic literature series “Philosophical Thought in the Islamic World” since 2009. The editor of this series is Andrey Smirnov, RAS academician, acting deputy research director of the RAS Institute of Philosophy.

22 books on Islamic philosophy have been published as part of this series. Several representatives of the Institute of Philosophy (I.R. Nasyrov, A.V. Smirnov, and E.A. Frolova), as well as by employees of other academic and educational institutions (R.V. Pshu and G.B. Shamilli) were involved in the preparation of these editions.

The series consists of four parts: Translations, Studies, Textbooks, and Primary Sources.

The “Translations” include translations of the works written by Ibn Arabi (“Selected Works (Volume 1)” and “Selected Works (Volume 2)”), Seyyed Hossein Nasr (“Islamic Philosophers: Ibn Sina, al-Suhrawardi, Ibn Arabi”), and Mahmud Shabistari (“The Seret Rose Garden” (Persian text of the poem, translation, commentary).

The “Studies” include 16 volumes of research works on Islamic philosophy:

– “Arabic Philosophy: Past and Present”, “The Discourse of Arabic Philosophy”, and “The Discourse of The Modern Arabic Philosophy (Part 1)” by E. A. Frolova;

– “Ibrahim Ibn Sayyar An-Nazzam”, “Abu al-Qasim al-Kabi and Decline of the Baghdad School of Mu’tazilism” and Essays on the History of Zaidite Thought in 7th-11th Centuries by F.O. Nofal;

– collection of articles “Revolution and Evolution in Islamic Thought and History” edited by Yu. E. Fedorova and Yu.E. Fedorova‘s monograph The Knowledge Journey: Experience of philosophical reading of Farid ad-Din Attar’s poem ‘The Language of Birds'”;

– “The Foundations of Islamic Mysticism (Genesis and Evolution)” and “Ibn Khaldun in the Ottoman Islamic Historiography” by I. R. Nasyrov;

– Three collections of articles edited by A. V. Smirnov: “Islamic Philosophy and Philosophical Islamic Studies: Prospects for Development”, “The scattered and the organized: Strategies of Organising Semantic Spaces in Arab-Muslim Culture”, and ” The scattered and the organized: cognitive methods of the Arab Muslim culture”;

– G.B. Shamilli’s monograph “The Philosophy of Music: Theory and Practice of maqām”;

– A.A. Lukashev’s monograph “The World of Meanings in Few Words: Mahmud Shabestari’s philosophical views in the context of the times”;

– T.G. Korneeva’s monograph “Nasir Khusraw and His Philosophical Views “.

In 2013 a two-volume textbook “The History of Arabic-Muslim Philosophy” edited by A.V. Smirnov was published in the section “Textbooks”. It includes the textbook itself and an anthology of classical texts.  Its improved, updated and corrected version — “The History of Arabic-Muslim Philosophy: Textbook and Anthology” — was published in 2020.

The “Primary Sources” section currently includes one work, which is a monument of medieval Arab-Muslim thought — “Interpretation of the “Sources of Questions and Answers”. Book Four: Speeches on Subtle [Matters]” by al-Hakim al-Jishami, prepared by F.O. Nofal.
