Islamic cities in Russian printed media in 19th and early 20th century

Abstract

The compilation contains a selection of publications in Russian printed media dated 19th and early 20th century, describing different Middle Eastern and Central Asian cities located within the borders of the Muslim civilization. Special emphasis is put on the sacred Islamic cities — Mecca, Medina and Karbala, as well as on description of Islamic monuments and customs in Cairo, Persia and Samarkand. These publications were written by Russian travellers, orientalists, diplomats, military men, journalists, artists who visited these places for different purposes. The book also features illustrations with brief comments. We hope that the materials from this collection will be of great interest both for experts and general readers interested in the history and culture of the Muslim East.
