Islamica & Orientalistica

The Islamica & Orientalistica series is issued by the Sadra publishing house with the support of the Ibn Sina Islamic Culture Research Foundation and the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. 

The first books of this series — “Orientalism vs. Orientalistics” and “Upbringing and Education from the Perspective of Muslim Thinkers. Vol. 1” — were published in 2015.

“Orientalism vs. Orientalistics” is a thematic collection of articles presenting different views of leading Russian and foreign scholars on the issue of orientalism, which was originally raised by Edward Said in his same-name work.

“Upbringing and Education from the Perspective of Muslim Thinkers. Vol. 1” is the first volume of the 5-volume work describing the views of the most reputable Muslim thinkers on upbringing and education.

The following works were published in 2016: “Studying Islam in the West” by M Al-Wiri, “Al-‘Aka’id an-Nasafiyya” (Nasafi’s matters of faith) by Najm ad-Din an-Nasafi, and the collection of articles “Muslims in the new imperial history”.

M. Al-Wiri in his book “Studying Islam in the West” presents the Islamic view on Islamic, orientalistics and Oriental studies in the West.

“Al-‘Aka’id an-Nasafiyya” (Nasafi’s matters of faith) by Najm ad-Din an-Nasafi is a collection of treatises in Persian and Arabic written in modern Tajik and Arab script and accompanied with a Russian translation.

The collection of articles “Muslims in the new imperial history” provides insight into the role of Muslims in the Russian Empire in 1721–1917.

The 2nd volume of collection of articles “Upbringing and Education from the Perspective of Muslim Thinkers” has been published in 2018. This collection of works offers a review of the opinions of the most famous medieval Muslim thinkers’ (Al-Jahiz, Ibn Sahnun, al-Farabi, al-Qabisi and Ibn Sina) on education. 

The book “A man at the minbar. The image of a Muslim leader in the Tatar and Turkish literature (end of 19th -first third of 20th century)” by A.T.Sibgatullinahas been published in 2018. It is the first book published based on the results of the Ibn Sina grant contest. The book explores the images of religious leaders (muftis, imams, sheikhs, mullas etc.) in the Tatar and Turkish literature at the turn of 19-20th century, which reflected the changes happening in the public conscience and artistic thinking of Turkic Muslims: the Tatar nation living in the Russian empire, and the Turkish nation inhabiting the Ottoman empire.

The 3rd volume of collection of articles “Upbringing and Education from the Perspective of Muslim Thinkers” has been published in 2021. This book presents the pedagogical views of the great medieval thinker Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali.
