Translation of Shahriyar’s poem “The Heroes of Stalingrad” published

A poem of one of the greatest Iranian poets of the 20th century, Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Tabrizi, has been published in Russian for the first time.

The poem entitled “Heroes of Stalingrad” reveals all stages of the World War II and its turning point — the defeat of Nazi troops at Stalingrad. The work is filled with symbols that are typical for this Persian classical poet’s works and stretch back to the ancient Iranian myths.

The poem was translated from Persian by I. V. Abramenko (lecturer at the National Research University “Higher School of Economics”) and V. S. Zharkova. It was prepared with the support of the Ibn Sina Foundation and the “Hayyam Cultural Center” and published to celebrate the 77th anniversary of Victory Day.

Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Tabrizi (1906-1988), also known as Shahriyar, was an outstanding lyric poet of the 20th century who wrote in Persian and Azerbaijani languages. His works are filled with humanism and calls to remain loyal to eternal moral values. Many of Shahriyar’s works were written in reaction to global events.
