Conference “Islamic Studies: Fact, Method, Interpretation” at the RAS Institute of Philosophy: February 2023

On 2-3 February, 2023, the RAS Institute of Philosophy and the Ibn Sina Islamic Culture Research Foundation will hold the conference entitled “Islamic Studies: Fact, Method, Interpretation”, which will coincide with the publication of the first issue of “Ishrak”, an Islamic Philosophy yearbook.

The purpose of the conference is to discuss the image of modern Islamic studies, its tools and major trends. Oriental studies have come a long way — from the works of European missionaries to the treatises of contemporary structuralists and phenomenologists. The diversity of scholars’ approaches to the subject of their professional interests corresponds to the richness of the available material. However, nowadays Oriental studies — in particular, academic Islamic studies — still require a discussion on the optics and results of the latest research. The Ishrak Islamic Philosophy Yearbook has been a platform for such discussions for twelve years. The same-name edition launched by the Institute of Philosophy in 2022 is supposed to maintain the tradition of the yearbook established by its late editor, our colleague Janis Eshots.

The organizers of the conference invite the friends of Ishrak, Orientalists and Islamic scholars of a wide range of disciplines who would like to talk about the contemporary image of their disciplines, including the methods, goals and objectives of their studies. The conference participants will discuss the past and present state of philosophical Islamic studies, its theoretical foundations and their practical applications. The discussion proceedings prepared by the participants will be featured in the next issues of the Ishrak Islamic Philosophy yearbook.

The conference programme will include two sections, a methodological and an applied one.

The sessions will be held on 2-3 February 2023 in the hall of the Academic Council of the RAS Institute of Philosophy (12 Goncharnaya str., bld. 1, Moscow, 109240).

The working languages of the conference are Russian and Farsi (translation will be provided).

The participants can attend the conference online or in person.

The materials submitted by the participants in accordance with the editorial board requirements will be published in the next issues of Ishrak Islamic Philosophy yearbook.

Those who would like to have their materials published in the Ishrak yearbook are requested to submit them before March 1, 2023, as required by the editorial board.
