The lecture by K. Vasiltsov “Sacred music in Islam: Sama‘ as the music of Sufi rites” delivered at Mayakovsky Library

On the 21st of September 2024 the lecture entitled  “Sacred music in Islam: Sama‘ as the music of Sufi rites” was delivered at Mayakovsky Library.

Konstantin Vasiltsov, who is a Candidate of historical sciences and an Assistant Professor at the Saint Petersburg State University, spoke on the history, philosophy and role of such Sufi rites as Sama‘.

Sama‘ (Arab. “listening”) is an important spiritual practice in the Islamic mysticism. It combines music, prayers and dancing it the framework of a wholesome rite. The tradition of Holy Quran recitation as well as common musical poetic genres have formed the basis of this ritual practice.

The lecture was delivered in the framework of collaboration between Ibn Sina Foundation and Mayakovsky Library.
