Fundamentals of Muslim manuscriptology (Centers of correspondence, codicological elements, principles of cataloging and methods for determining the autencity of manuscripts)

Abstract

More than thousand years of its existence a manuscript has been a core part of social, political and cultural life of Muslims. Acquaintance with a manuscript as a unique artwork gives a researcher a possibility to approach the epoch he studies and to feel it better. This feature distinguishes a manuscript from a printed book because it is totally created by people who implemented a part of their soul into this artwork. Manuscripts’s creators and owners often left their own remarks at its pages, and it tells us a lot about themselves and their era. As a result, a manuscript frequently became a masterpiece that united various epochs that sometimes used to be very far from each other.

The monograph by H. ‘Azimi is a guide to the amazing world of Muslims manuscripts from researcher’s perspective. The author covers a wide range of issues related to archeography, paleography, codicology and textual criticism that  are auxiliary disciplines in the study of manuscripts (manuscriptology).

The book is addressed to specialists on Muslim manuscripts, students studying these sciences and everybody who is interested in the Oriental book culture.
