Dagestan Arabic-language epistolary sources and documents (late XVIII – early XX centuries)

Abstract

This study introduces into scientific circulation 1000 Arabic-language epistolary sources (letters) and documents of the late XVIII – early XX centuries from the Oriental Manuscripts Fund of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Dagestan Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, most of which had not been previously published. These letters and documents are unique sources for the study of historical events that took place during this period, as well as the life and activities of various strata of Dagestan society. The thematic diversity of the letters and documents studied is quite rich. There are correspondence from the period of the Caucasian War, and letters covering issues of a regulatory and socio-economic nature, as well as official documents. The published materials are given with brief annotations translated from Arabic into Russian and accompanied by comments. This work will be of interest not only to historians, but also to a wide range of readers interested in the history of Dagestan.
