Janis Eschots passed away

Based on the information received from the ISNA news agency, Janis Eshots passed away in London on June 18, 2021. All these days we have been hoping that his friends and colleagues who told us about his depart were somehow mistaken, but unfortunately, we have to admit the heart-wrenching truth.

From the very first days of the Foundation’s establishment Janis was not just our colleague and partner, but also a close friend, a brilliant conversationalist and a spiritually gifted man who could feel the internal meaning of the Islamic culture. His relationship with Islamic philosophy and mysticism went beyond mere interest; he lived in accordance with those high spiritual and moral guidelines given to the world by the great arifs of the Islamic golden age.

Janis Eshots’ legacy is truly unique. He was the world’s leading expert on Safavid Islamic philosophy. Unfortunately, Janis did not witness the publication of his last book “Patterns of wisdom in Safavid Iran”, but many of his Russian editions written or edited by him were published under the auspices of Ibn Sina Foundation. His most significant works included translations of the treatises “The Key to the Hidden” by Sadr al-Din al-Qunawi and “The Throne Wisdom” by Sadr al-Din al-Shirazi.

Our long-standing unique project, the yearbook on Islamic philosophy (“Ishrak”) was accomplished only because due to his professionalism, wide outlook and enthusiasm.

The passing of Janis Eshots is a tragic loss for academic community and for many of his friends from different countries.

President of the Ibn Sina Foundation,
