Abstract

“Her I” by Reza Amir-Hani tells the story of the Fattah family from Tehran: the grandfather, his son and daughter-in-law, and their children — Ali and Maryam. The plot covers the period from the Pahlavi dynasty (1933) until present days. At the background it features historical events and turmoil happened in Iran in the 20th century: the White Revolution, the Islamic revolution, the war, attempts to westernize the country and people’s endeavours to keep their original identity and lifestyle. However, the author focuses not so much on politics and history, but on the man himself, his contradictory inner world, his growing and personality development, dialogue with himself and God, love and death. Narration about the family’s life gives place to immersion in the subjective world of the main character’s thoughts, where the time becomes non-linear and the text is replete with memories, associations, thoughts, colours, feelings and odours. In this patchwork we can see the brightest figure of his beloved woman, the neighbours’ daughter, Mahtab, whose life came to a tragic end in the Iran-Iraq war during a Tehran air strike.

Reza Amir-Hani novel is a delicate, profound philosophical reflection on life evanescence, death imminence and immortality, essence of love and relationships with God. The book is intended for a wide range of readers interested in fiction.
