Abstract

This book of Sayyid Salman Safavi, a modern representative of the Safaviya mystical order (tarikat), contains a description of the basic principles of Islamic mysticism. Providing definitions to such notions like mysticism (‘irfan, tasavvuf), mystic (salik), mystical path (suluk), mystical journey (asfar), the author focuses his attention not on theoretical (nazari), but on practical (amali) aspects of Islamic mysticism. In particular, he gives recommendations regarding commendable religious acts, lifestyle, code of conduct, diet, sleep duration, religious practice for the believers striving for a more profound spiritual attitude in terms of Islamic tradition. The author also cites the Qur’anic verses and best examples of Persian Sufi poetry considered as recognized masterpieces of the world literature.

The book is intended for researchers in Islamic mysticism, practicing Muslims and general readers interested in Islamic culture, philosophy and poetry.
